inspiring women series : jodie

featuring .. jodie

Name :          Jodie

Role :             Endorsed Enrolled Nurse

Location :     Brisbane 🇦🇺

Brief role description/main responsibilities :

I work in the contraception clinic providing patient care, education and assisting doctors with procedures.  I also do administration duties within the clinic.

What do you most enjoy about your role?  What is the favourite part of your role? :

I love being able to empower women to make educated, informed decisions about their health, to be able to connect with them and make their experience with our organisation a positive one.

How did you get into your role/industry?

I spent most of my 20s and 30s being a single mum to my 4 kids. When the youngest was old enough to go to high school I made the decision to follow my dreams, go back to school and get my diploma. I was incredibly honoured that my eldest daughter wanted to pursue this dream too, and she joined me on the wild and crazy journey of nursing school.

I had always been passionate about women’s health and education. Once I had graduated I sent a cold call email to an organisation that had a vision and mission statement that resonated with me. Lo and behold, a few weeks later, they offered me a job and here I am, working with an amazing group of women who inspire and support me every day to be the best I can possibly be.

Have you been involved in something “out of the box”? :

I have been involved in helping to create an education program to teach other nurses how to assist doctors to perform the procedures we do here in the clinic.

Do you have a favourite saying or quote? :

Take the time to waste a moment – life can become so hectic that we forget to stop and appreciate the joy in just “being”.

Tell us a funny story about your role or an amusing experience at work :

There are lots of funny stories but they all involve nudity and bodily fluids!

What advice would you give to women? :

It is never to late to follow your dreams.

Have you ever encountered any negative experiences that, although difficult at the time, may have helped shape who you are today? :

When I first became a single parent, I had very low self esteem. I had moved out of the family home with 4 small children into a run down worker’s cottage in a small country town to try and rebuild my life. It was a tough time.

I remember one day the toilet backed up and started to leak, it was a Sunday and I had no idea what to do, other than ring the landlord. I was determined that it was time to stand up and be self sufficient and not rely on someone else to fix something as simple as a leaky toilet…other women do this stuff all the time right??

I had a brain wave to google how to fix a toilet and after much swearing and trouble shooting, I fixed the toilet, mopped up the mess and had a lightbulb moment….if I could do this, then what else could I do?

Sounds silly, but it was a pivotal moment for me.

Any feedback or comments about your she wears :

I have the red sneakers and get so many comments from my co workers and patients about how cool and funky they are.

Any other comments, stories or anecdotes you’d like to share :

Sometimes, we just have to trust that life is going to put us where we need to be. Don’t be afraid to take a risk, if Plan A doesn’t pan out there are another 25 letters in the alphabet.
